Zodiac signs in relationships

Your Sun sign is the most familiar layer of astrology: the sign the Sun appeared to occupy on the day you were born. In a relationship map, it offers a quick read on temperament, style and what each person tends to find attractive or frustrating.

How Sun signs are assigned

horo uses the standard tropical date table, which ties each sign to a stretch of the calendar, from Aries in late March to Pisces in late February and March. The exact day the Sun changes sign shifts slightly from year to year and depends on time of birth, so birthdays within a day of a boundary are flagged as near the cusp. If that is you, it is worth reading both neighboring signs.

Elements

The twelve signs fall into four elements. Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) tend toward enthusiasm and action. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) lean practical and steady. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are oriented toward ideas and conversation. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) lead with feeling and intuition.

Signs of the same element often understand each other quickly. Fire and air tend to energize each other, as do earth and water. Other combinations can take more translation, which is not the same as incompatibility.

Modalities

Each sign also has a modality. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) like to initiate. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) like to sustain and can be stubborn. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt and adjust. Two fixed signs may dig in during conflict, while two mutable signs may struggle to settle on a plan.

Where signs fit in the map

Sun sign compatibility is one voice among several. horo sets it next to numerology and current timing, so you can see whether your signs tell the same story as your numbers, or a different one.
