Tarot readings

Hold the question in mind. Shuffle the deck, turn it if you want to, and stop when you feel ready - where you stop is what you draw.

For example: “What is actually going on with me?”

1. You, in this
2. What crosses it
3. What it grew from
4. What has just passed
5. What is at the top of your mind
6. What arrives next
7. What you bring to it
8. What the people around you bring
9. What you hope for and dread
10. Where this is going

How it works

Four steps, and you do two of them

  1. Choose the question

Seven areas, twenty-five spreads. Each one asks something different and reads its cards accordingly - two seven-card spreads never mean the same thing.

  2. Shuffle, and stop

You start the shuffle and you stop it. Turn the deck if you want to. Where you stop decides the draw, which is why no two readings here are the same.

  3. Watch them land

The cards fly out and settle into the spread, face down, some of them reversed. You turn them over one at a time, or all at once.

  4. Read it

Every card is read for the place it landed in. Then the whole spread is read together: how much of it is Major Arcana, which suit leads, what is missing, what repeats.

An honest lens

Tarot is an art of symbolism, not of fact-finding. The readings portray a scenario in which you are currently placed and help you frame your thoughts about the same. They are not evidence about anybody else’s private thoughts, and they are not predictions.

The draw is genuinely random: cryptographic randomness from your own browser, mixed with how long you shuffled and the moment you stopped. Nothing is weighted toward a nice answer, and nothing about your reading is sent anywhere - it is composed in your browser and kept in this tab only.

The same account of how everything on this site is calculated is on the method page.

Questions about tarot readings

Are these tarot readings free?

Yes. Every spread, the full 78-card deck and the whole written reading are free, with no account and nothing to unlock.

How are the cards chosen?

Your browser generates cryptographic random bytes, which are mixed with how long you shuffled, the exact moment you pressed stop and how many times you turned the deck. The deck is then shuffled completely and dealt in order into the spread. Nobody, including us, can predict or repeat a draw.

What does a reversed card mean?

A reversed card is the same card at a lower ebb: blocked, turned inward, weakening, or on its way out. It is not the opposite of the card and it is not a bad omen. Roughly half of the cards in any draw come out reversed, the same as a physical deck that has been shuffled and turned.

How do I pick the right spread?

Start from the question rather than the number of cards. Choose the area of life it belongs to, then the spread whose question sounds most like yours. If you are new, My Current Inner State is three cards and takes a minute.

Can tarot tell me what someone else is thinking?

No. Spreads that name two people are written to read the situation between them, and we deliberately avoid claiming to know anybody’s private thoughts or what they will do. Read those spreads as a map of what you are carrying, not as evidence about another person.

Can I save a reading?

A reading stays in your browser tab, so you can refresh or come back to it from the menu until you close the tab. Nothing is stored on our side, because nothing about it ever leaves your browser.

What is your question about?

Not “pick a number of cards” - pick what you actually want to understand. Twenty-five spreads across seven areas of life, a full 78-card deck, and reversals, because in a real deck nobody knows which way up a card is until it lands.
